Dear everyone,

Well, we're now into the final section of the "On Every Street" tour! It is, of course, just over12 months ago that the tour started in Dublin, althought it's been such a busy year it feels like much longer than that. Hope all of you have managed to see the band at least once and that you had a great time. Although at times the amount of work this end has nearly driven me mad. I think I'll miss it when it quietens down in October, and will probably wake up the day after the Zaragoza show wishing I had a few journalists to organize or guest lists to work on!

The band members really appreciated their recent few days break and most of them headed for the sun and just lazed about. Chris Whitten, however, rushed off to Los Angeles to get married to his long-time girlfriend Jordan, so congratulations in order there! Mark managed to get to three different countries in 10 days, the USA, France and England - and he called in at the office on his way back from taking Benji and Joseph to the National History Museum - they were obviously thrilled to have dad back for a little while. We all abandoned work for the afternoon in favor of drawing pictures of dinosaurs with the kids, which made a very pleasant change...We managed to pass on to Mark all the birthday cards and presenrs you had sent in for him, and he says a very big "Thank Yooouu" to everyone!

OK, on with the news, and first of all, let's get the subject of subs payments out of the way:

EXTRA SHOWS CONFIRMED

Since the last newsletter, we've confirmed a few extra gigs: the band are now definitely doing a third show in Milan on 9th September, a second show in Montauban (* SEE BELOW) on 26th September, a third show in Barcelona on 5th October, and a second show in Madrid on 7th October. Phone numbers for ticket information are the same as listed in the last newsletter. These shows have either just gone on sale, or are about to.

TOULOUSE/MONTAUBAN

I'm sure those of you who live in the area will know, but for anyone else thinking of attending the show in Toulouse - please not it isn't in Toulouse any more. It's in Montauban, which is a short drive to the north! Sorry, but don't blame us, blame Michael Jackson!!! He wanted his own tickets to sell out in Toulouse, so block-booked the venue for a couple of weeks either side of his own show, so no other band could play there and complete for ticket-buyers...

NEW NAME FOR THE BAND?!

The band are, in fact, thinking of changing, their name to The Drought-busters since they have managed to bring rain to so many European cities! In one Spanish town, there had been no rain for about three months until DS got there, but as soon as they stepped on the stage, the heavens opened and it just tipped down. Thankfully last weekend was a total contrast - I've just got back from Marabella where it was gloriously sunny and hot. In fact, the scaffolding which forms the basis of the stage was untouchable during the day (it would burn the skin off your hands) so the crew either had to work nights 11 pm when it was considerably cooler for them, and the show finished after 1 am (imagine the complaints we would get from nearby residents if we did that in the UK). Of course, now I've come back to England, the band have gone on the other usually-hot-and-sunny parts of Spain. Last night they played Pamplona, where it hasn't rained during the month of August for about 40 years. Guess what? It rained... By the way, while I'm on the subject - hello. Klavs from Copenhagen! And yes, I did enjoy the show there despite the monsoon. I don't think I could have got any wetter if I'd swum the Atlantic. Still, the band's addition to the set (a brilliant rendition of "Singin' In The Rain") made all worthwhile...

NIMES SHOW TV/RADIO SUMULCAST

We are currently negotiating for the following countries to take a TV / radio simulcast of the 20th September Nimes show. France (Canal Plus), Italy, Germany, Spain, Austria, Portugal, Belgium, Finland, Greece, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. More counties between 29th September (i.e. live) and the end of October.

UK - BBC OR ITV MAY SHOW THE BASEL GIG

Nothing is definite yet, but it MAY be that the BBC or ITV will show the Basel concert that Sky TV viewers have already seen. If something can be finalised, we are going to try and get them to put it on towards Christmas.

VIDEO CLIPS COMPILATION

This will probably now come out in the UK in late October or November of this year, and other countries shortly afterwards, not spring of next year as originally planned. Couldn't think of anything very inspiring to call it, so it's got the very original title "Dire Straits The Videos". We have a tentative list of tracks as follows (director's names in brackets):

Sultans Of Swing (can't remember!) Money For Nothong (Steve Barron)
Wild Wesr End (can't remember!) Brothers In Arms (Steve Barron)
Skateaway (Lester Bookbinder) Calling Elvis (Steve Barron)
Romeo & Juliet (Lester Bookbinder) Heavy Fuel (Steve Barron)
Tunnel Of Love (Lester Bookbinder) The Bug (Stephen Johnson)
Private Investgation (can't remember!) Your Own Sweet Way - NHBs (Neil Abramson)
Love Over Gold (Peter Sinclair) Feel Like Going Home - NHBs (Neil Abramson)
Twisting By The Pool (Peter Sinclair) Will You Miss Me - NHBs (Neil Abramson)
So Far Away (Pete Cornish) Private Investigations live version (Peter Sinclair)
Walk Of Live (Stephen Johnson) Going Home (Peter Sinclair)

I will put full datails in the October newsletter, by which time hopefully one of us will have remembered the rest of the directors' names!!!

LIVE ALBUMS/VIDEO UPDATE

These are still scheduled for Spring 1993 release. After a short break at the end of the tour, on 1th November the band will still start sifting through all the stuff that has been recorded or filmed on this tour. That's about 14 shows so will take rather a long time! Don't know yet whether the final release will be made up of one complete show or bits from various shows, we'll have to wait and see how they all turn out.

BEST OF SOUNDTRACK

These are tentative plans afoot to release a "best-of" Mark's film soundtrack albums, many of which are not available in all countries. The album would come out next year - no more details at this stage. I'll tell you more as we go along...

LONG WAY TO GO TO A SHOW

Lots of you have written in with descriptions of various incredible journeys you have made in order to see DS in concert, and here are a few of the best:

UK TICKET COLLECTIONS

Several of you have written in wanting used UK concert tickets to make up a complete set. I have managed to acquire tickets from some of the shows (unfortunately not all of them), and you will find an order form later on this letter for those we have available. They're free, but please send a stamped addressed envelope/IRC with your order. I don't have any for overseas shows, so if you want to make collections of those, you can trade via the "Buy/Sell/Exchange" column.

DS LICENCE PLATES

As you can see from the photo below DSIS member Jay ..., from Monticello, USA, has got some unique licence plates on his car! And before you all write in - no, he's not selling them!

DIRE STRAITS MURAL IN LONDON

This has actually been around for several years, bit DSIS member Claudia Katrin ... send in a photo of it recently, which jogged my memory, and I thought maybe some of you might be interested in it hence the mention! It was painted on a large wall on the Deptford estate where Mark, John and Pick Withers once shared a flat (it was here that that they formed the band). Painted by local schoolchildren, it was inspired by the theme "Love Over Gold" and sponsored by the band, to raise money for local charities. Anyone who is visiting London and wants to go and have a look at it - it's on the Crossfields Estate, Deptford, East London. Here's a photocopy of a picture of it - unfortunately it doesn't really do it justice. By the way, on the subject of DSIS members visiting London - this past month has been absolutely chaotic here! It seems like EVERYONE has been to London, and to our office... It's neem nice to meet so many of you from around the world. Sorry if we couldn't welcome you here for more than a few minutes, but as I am sure you will understand, when we have so many visitors, we can't stop and chat for too long (we'd never get any work done!).
